A money-crush, at least. The Herald reports that Bay Staters gave the most money per capita to Obama's campaign of any state, at $1.583 each. Vermont and Illinois were close, with $1.580 and $1.558 per capita respectively, but nobody ponied up as much dough as we did. The Herald points out that this is a little odd, considering Obama didn't even win the primary here . But apparently we've got enough rich-folks-getting-richer who don't want a president who isn't sure how many homes he has . At least our rich people can count their summer homes on the Cape and across town . Herald commenters, unlike the rest of Massachusetts, do not have much affection for Obama, calling him a "clown" who "squats when he pees." Ah, reasoned debate.

Obama has an image problem: Many swing voters here and throughout the country consider the presumptive Democratic nominee distant, pompous, arrogant, even elitist. “It’s a big issue that he needs to address,” said Eric Davis, a professor emeritus of political science at Middlebury College in Vermont. And how has he chosen to address it? By going overboard and [...]

Be fruitful and multiply. (Green Mountain Daily - Front Page)

Chiun may have been onto something. A piece in today's Times Argus seems to suggest something that would be an economic stimulus package for Vermont....or should I say, "bundle", as in, "bundle of joy"? Vermont, already one of the oldest states in the country, has the second-lowest fertility rate in the nation, according to a report released earlier this week by the U.S. Census Bureau. And the low birthrate, state officials say, could accelerate a demographic shift that threatens to shrink Vermont's workforce. Green Mountain Boys (and girls), you've been given a mandate here. More below the fold. The shortage of working-age Vermonters is among the chief economic hurdles facing the state, according to Kevin Dorn, secretary of the Agency of Commerce and Community Development. In the last year, he says, the number of people in Vermont's workforce fell by 2,000. Never mind the fact that I'd be more than willing to increase it by one immediately, with two more in reserve, we all need to do our part here. A creative solution has been proposed, but looks like Governor DoesLess isn't buying into it: In Russia, plagued for years by low birthrates, the governor of one province instituted "Conception Day," when young couples are encouraged to take the day off from work and make babies. Successful couples win prizes, including TVs, refrigerators and washing machines. Douglas says a similar holiday is unlikely to find its way onto the Vermont calendar anytime soon. "I haven't considered anything that creative," he says. You want creative? Ever read, or see the film version of, Harlan Ellison's " A Boy And His Dog "? One underground city, "Topeka", fashioned in a mockery of 1950s rural innocence and brave-new-worldian madness, solves its need for exogamous reproduction by forcibly extracting fluids from sperm donors. But the city is running low on viable donors. Quilla June (played by Susanne Benton), the daughter of one of Topeka's committee leaders, is sent to the surface to bait Vic into "service." Drastic times call for drastic measures... Improving birthrates presents something of a conundrum for policymakers. Jane Dye, author of the Census report, attributes Vermont's low birthrate to its racial homogeneity and high education levels among women - factors not easily changed by government intervention. ...you got any better ideas?
