Filed under: Industry , Fiber Just over a year ago, we heard that AT&T would be sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into the Carolinas in an attempt to "upgrade its fiber network, further broadband deployment, and deliver internet-based technologies to customers in North Carolina and South Carolina." Now, we're beginning to see signs of life. According to this nondescript job posting on Craigslist, AT&T is scouting residential field agents specifically for U-verse in the Raleigh / Durham, NC region. Sure, this could very well be a hoax of some strange kind, but we can't possibly be more hopeful that it's not. Hey TWC -- is this enough to get you to add a few HD channels to your absolutely abysmal selection in the Triangle ? [Thanks, Jonathan] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Road to Denver: Jacob from Iowa (Obama HQ)

Jacob, 24, of New Vienna, Iowa was not even here to cast his vote in the 2004 elections. He had to send his ballot in direct from Baghdad. A soldier in the 82nd Airborne based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Jacob spent four years in the Army, including two deployments to Baghdad as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. But his next deployment will be much easier – Jacob is soon leaving Iowa for Colorado to be a delegate at the national convention. “Since I was oversees during the last election, I wanted to be more involved this time,” he says. “It’s just something I felt I had to do. In that way, it’s a lot like when I joined the Army. I just followed my gut.” This time, Jacob’s gut has driven him to get involved in influencing the future of the Democratic Party at the convention and stand up for his fellow soldiers. I told people at the delegate electing convention how I felt about the war. We have 150,000 pairs of boots on the ground, and every day a family is told that their son or daughter will come home wearing only one boot, or simply find their boots sent him in a box. I will be wearing my boots at the convention. I wanted to be a delegate to give a voice to the men and women in the military and make sure the government hears them. Jacob is especially concerned about the Iraq war and veterans issues. He was injured in Iraq and is now considered 80% disabled by the Army, primarily due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When he left the Army, he joined a group in Iowa trying to get help for injured soldiers returning home. The government estimates that more than 20 percent of soldiers coming back from Iraq have PTSD. The effects of this are huge. Families are hurt by it. We need to care for these guys and get them the help they need. The new GI Bill is a great start. It’s about time. Jacob even wrote a book about his own experiences in Iraq. He says the writing helped in dealing with his own PTSD and the realities of war. My greatest hope is that we can get out of Iraq soon. We need to finish the job but do it responsibly. There are good things coming out of the war, but they are nothing compared with the atrocities we are seeing. There are over 35,000 dead and 4,000 wounded. We’re sending people home broken. And we need to fix this policy. Jacob hopes Obama will bring a fresh perspective to the war. “Obama is new, young, and has the intestinal fortitude to see these things through and bring back the power to the people. America has always been great. We just need to get back on track.” Since returning from the Army, Jacob has become a full time college student studying secondary education and English. He hopes to become a teacher. He is also adjusting back to farming life. Jacob hopes to address agricultural issues as a delegate at the convention. I was raised on a family dairy farm, and when I got out of the military I bought acreage next to the farm I grew up on. Family farms are really struggling right now. The rising costs of fuel is hard on farmers, and the price that we’re getting for our products is not keeping up with rising inflation. We need to help the small family farmers. In addition to being a delegate, Jacob has been working to get more people voting. “We can’t forget the power of the vote. It’s the most powerful tool we have.” With just four days to go until the start of the Democratic National Convention, excitement is building in Denver and across America. Soon, delegates from all fifty states will convene in the Mile High City to cast their ballots for Barack Obama and witness his acceptance of the Democratic Party's nomination for president of the United States. Thursday, August 28th will be the biggest night of the campaign so far. Even if you can’t be in Denver, you can be a part of this historic convention by attending a Convention Watch Party in your area.

Teen Drops Out of School to Play Guitar Hero (Babble.com)

Many parents of gifted children allow their kids to take time off of school to pursue their artistic or athletic vocation. But what if that vocation is playing video games? Meet Blake Peebles , a 16-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina who is one of the best Guitar Hero players in the country—meaning, he has a rare talent for pressing buttons on a toy guitar hooked up to a TV screen. Last September, Blake’s parents finally gave in to his repeated requests to drop out of high school and focus on what he loves. Now, instead of attending high school, Blake studies with a private tutor—and puts in long hours with his Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. But this is not all fun and games. Blakes hopes to turn his gaming abilities into a lucrative career. Players signed by Major League Gaming (no, I'm not making this up) earn as much as $80,000 a year competing in tournaments. So far, Blake has won around $1,000—but that money came in the form of gift certificates, gaming equipment, and Chick Fil-A combo meals. He hopes to start bringing in some actual cash after his father takes him to the U.S. regionals of the World Cyber Games. Concerned family and friends have been quick to condemn the Peebles' decision. But Blake's parents have watched his work ethic and grades improve under a private tutor, and most importantly, they say that Blake is now happy. “I wasn’t really good at anything else that I liked,” he says. Still, the fact remains that being good at Guitar Hero means staying up till 4 a.m. staring at a TV screen. Do you think the Peebles should have forced Blake to remain in school? Or were they right to trust their son to know what was best for him? Photo: The News and Observer/Corey Lowenstein

Getting Fat? Maybe it is the Hidden MSG in Your Food (Diabetes Update)

Scientists already knew that adding MSG (monsodium glutamate) to their feed causes weight gain in rodents. Now an interesting study done by scientists at the University of North Carolina quantifies JUST how fat MSG makes humans. More importantly, it finds that the effect of dietary MSG on weight gain is independent of how much you eat or exercise . The study uses an elegant design. As reported in this Science Daily article MSG Use Linked To Obesity , what the researchers did was this: "Researchers at UNC and in China studied more than 750 Chinese men and women, aged between 40 and 59, in three rural villages in north and south China. The majority of study participants prepared their meals at home without commercially processed foods. About 82 percent of the participants used MSG in their food. Those users were divided into three groups, based on the amount of MSG they used. The third who used the most MSG were nearly three times more likely to be overweight than non-users." This is a nice design because the study population was not eating a diet containing other food additives as their food was home cooked traditional fare. Chinese traditionally use MSG as a seasoning in their home cooking. Later the article says: "We found that prevalence of overweight was significantly higher in MSG users than in non-users," He said. "We saw this risk even when we controlled for physical activity, total calorie intake and other possible explanations for the difference in body mass. The positive associations between MSG intake and overweight were consistent with data from animal studies." If you are thinking, "Well, that is all very nice, but I don't eat Chinese food and I avoid foods with MSG on the label," it's worth considering that MSG is hidden in many if not all of the boxed, canned, and frozen foods they buy in the grocery store, including may "diet" foods. This is because manufacturers know buyers don't want to buy foods with MSG on the label, so they use another ingredient name for the component in the food that carries the monsodium glutamate molecule. MSG can be hidden, legally, being listed on a label as any of the following: Textured protein Hydrolyzed protein Yeast extract Glutamate Glutamic acid Gelatin Calcium caseinate Hydrolyzed corn gluten Monopotassium glutamate Sodium caseinate Yeast nutrient Yeast food Autolyzed yeast Natrium glutamate Other ways of hiding MSG are to call it "natural flavoring." Anything that contains soy sauce also contains MSG, too. With this in mind, take a look at lists of ingredients found on the foods in your pantry and fridge, you may be surprised at how many of them contain some form of MSG. Looking around my pantry and fridge just now, I found MSG in two salad dressings, mustard, barbecue sauce, and chicken broth. If you are having a problem controlling your weight or your hunger, eliminating all MSG from your diet might be worth a try.

Gregoire ended up on top by a tiny margin in 2004 after multiple ballot counts. This go-round, labor unions are playing aggressively in these and other statewide races with 527s and PACs. In Washington, a new $2.4 million union PAC supporting Gregoire seems likely to outspend pro-business groups supporting Rossi.By the way, at the same time the union-funded independent expenditures are on the air, the Gregoire administration is negotiating state pay raises with the unions.

State officials are cracking down on towns that haven’t filed plans for conserving water during the drought and the penalty could be as high as $10,000 a month. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said today that 55 North Carolina towns are out of compliance with a law passed last year that required municipal water systems to submit water shortage response plans by July 1. Towns that don’t have their own plans must follow the state’s conservation rules within 10 days of a drought. State rules ban uses such as lawn watering. Local plans must show how water system would deal with a drought.
