[TV] Another Home Office kneejerk (The Last Boy Scout)

Like night follows day, you can always rely on the Home Office to come up with a proposal that is not only unworkable, but will get the Daily Mail all in a flutter. They have reported this morning that the government plan to set up ANOTHER database that will detail " every phone call, e-mail, text message, internet search and online purchase in the fight against terrorism and other serious crime ." To be honest this is an old message, and one that we've all heard, and ridiculed before. The fact is that this sort of database is a pipedream and completely unworkable. To set it up would cost so much money, that the Northern Rock bill would look like loose change. Besides with this governments record on holding personal data, or more to the point losing said personal data, isn't exactly great. So if this pipe dream was ever to become a Bill, the proposal would be unworkable, so expensive that it would be silly, require thousands of additional civil servants to manage it, and probably be as secure as Harriet Harman's blog password was. Thankfully, when I read this report, I didn't overreact with the vigour of the Daily Mail, if anything I laughed and said "that old chesnut again". The thing is when the government are on a downer, the "threat to our safety" starts up with Labour saying that the opposition would undermine our national security. A popular line when John Reid was the Home Secretary. Perhaps Jacqui Smith is just trying her luck against a new Shadow Home Secretary, after all he has just shown her knife crime plans to be as half-baked as I feared that they probably would be. Is there no end to how much that this government would love to control every aspect of out lives?

Daily Mail : Big Brother database recording all our calls, texts and e-mails will 'ruin British way of life' ...
ID in the News : Big Brother database recording all our calls, texts and e-mails will ‘ruin British way of life’ ...

blogs : TruthSeeker24's anti-N.W.O. corner,ID in the News,Daily Mail on Sunday,Daily Mail,[SecurityRatty] Lattest Articles...
(7 posts, last update: 16/07/2008 20:40)

[TV] Telegraph: James May, Richard Hammond "May Leave" Top Gear Unless BBC Meets Salary Demands [Top Gear] (Jalopnik)

The UK's Telegraph is telling us today James May and Richard Hammond, two of Top Gear's threesome of hosts, have yet to sign new contracts recently presented to them by the BBC. According to the UK daily, they're holding out for the same multi-million pound deal received last month by Clarkson in his new contract. The Telegraph even goes so far as to say the two "may leave" the show if their contract demands are met. However, the only source they've been able to get a quote from on the record is none other than James May, who very clearly states "The only reason I haven't signed my contract yet is because it has not yet been finalized. The current one doesn't expire until the end of July. I'm sure a new one will be sorted out soon. I'm not stomping around about Jeremy's contract with BBC Worldwide. Quite frankly, I couldn't give a **** about it." But, the Telegraph 's sources say different. The paper's unnamed sources claim "the presenters of the hit BBC Two series had not yet signed their new contracts even though their current agreements expire at the end of the month...there has been "a meltdown" in negotiations and that the pair "turned down flat" the first offer from the BBC. There has been a lot of pulling out of hair, a Mexican stand-off. For the first time it is possible that one or both might leave." OK, obviously it'd be horrible if the two were to leave. But there really doesn't seem to be much of an indication they're doing anything but bargaining for larger contracts — something that given the pound amount Clarkson's pulling in, is well within their rights. Who these unnamed sources the Telegraph is quoting is anyone's guess — but ours is it's someone's agent — or Clarkson — attempting to play some one-upsmanship on behalf of the soon-to-be-contractless duo. Not a bad ploy if you ask us. We'll be watching the story nonetheless.
[TV] Star Trek Bottle Opener (Coolest Gadgets)

It is good to know that just like sex, drinking is a universal value. How else do you explain the Star Trek Experience bar located at Hilton Las Vegas? Not to mention numerous drinking holes found in the Star Wars universe, but we’re here to concentrate on the former series today with a unique bottle opener. As well as its supreme practicality, the Starship Enterprise Bottle Opener serves as a constant tribute to the most iconic pretend spacecraft in televisual history. Better still it’s embossed with the legendary NCC-1701 registration, so you can be sure you’re opening your bottle of wallop with a Shatner-era vessel. And that’s just as well because judging by his, erm, interesting cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Captain Kirk is the only member of Starfleet who likes a drink. Boldly going where no bottle opener has gone before. Make it so! Well, only true blue Trekkies need to pick this up, as I don’t see the rest of the drinking crowd willing to fork out £12.95 for a ‘mere’ bottle opener when their teeth double up as one just fine.

Chris Cocker, 36-year-old man from Blackburn England, was watching a comedy show at home. He laughed so hard he fell off his sofa. His neighbor in the apartment below heard the thud and called the police. When the police came to Cocker's door, he refused to let them in. Cocker tried to shut to door, but the officer stuck his foot in the door and pepper sprayed Cocker. After being sprayed with pepper spray, Mr Cocker was put into a police van and taken to a police station where he said he was stripped naked and spent a night in the cells. A spokesman for Lancashire Police said officers used a pepper spray as "reasonable force" for their own protection after they feared for their safety when he became aggressive. The BBC has a video.
[TV] BBC to broadcast live TV streams on the internet (Download Squad)

Filed under: Internet , Video First came pirated copies of TV shows being traded over the internet by fans the BBC iPlayer service which lets UK residents watch any TV program that's aired in the last seven days. Now the BBC plans to stream BBC1 content live over the internet . The new streaming service will go live sometime int he next few months. The BBC already streams content from several of its news channels live, but this will be the first time you'll be able to watch live TV from the BBC's flagship channel on the web. You'll need a broadband internet connection to watch. And you'll also also need to pay the same £139.50 annual license fee that you pay to watch television in the UK. Critics complain that it could be tricky for the BBC to enforce that policy, which means that television owners could wind up subsidizing the content watched by people who own a computer but no television set. But officials charged with enforcing the TV licensing policy say they have ways to catch moochers. All of which means that we probably won't be tuning into BBC1 over the internet in the US any time soon. thanks Omar !
