[Technology] Top 5 web 2.0 sites account for 1 in every 15 UK Internet visits (Hitwise)

We issued a press release today containing our latest social network market share data. Facebook continues to grow its market share in the UK and reached a new high of 45% in June. However, that growth has been at the expense of Bebo and MySpace, which have both lost share in the UK over the last 12 months. The table above is based on a specific custom category of social networks, and therefore excludes a number of sites with social media features. Taking a broader definition of Web 2.0 sites, the declining market share of Bebo and MySpace is even more marked. As the chart below illustrates, YouTube.com overtook Bebo to become the second most visited Web 2.0 property in the UK during June, while Wikipedia overtook MySpace to move into fourth position. Combined, these five sites now account for one in every 15 UK Internet visits.

Inside Facebook : June ComScore/Hitwise Social Networking Numbers in for US, UK ...
This is Herd : The Facebook-isation of Britain ...

blogs : Hitwise,Inside Facebook,This is Herd...
(3 posts, last update: 23/07/2008 10:39)

[Technology] Jinsei lets you Walk out the Game of Life, Literally (Coolest Gadgets)

You may look at this picture and wonder if the Virtual Pet is making a comeback, but it is actually something new altogether with the Jinsei Game Punchi. Takara Tomy is releasing this electronic game to celebrate Jinsei, which we know as the game of Life. I’m sure all have you have at least heard of the game of Life, where you have to make money, get a house, have kids, all with that really odd spinner. In other words, it’s your life, but in game form to make it fun. The Jinsei Game Puchi takes this game of Life to the next level as you must take 300 steps before the spinner will spin. There is a pedometer to measure the amount of steps of taken, but I suppose cheaters could just shake it. In other words, this is a game of Life that you have to walk out! Just like life! Unlike life, the user interfaces with the game with something that is reminiscent of a tamagotchi, so you will live a virtual life in this virtual pet style of play. I’m wondering if this Jinsei Game Punchi is just the beginning. Perhaps they will make a similar version of Monopoly that involves you walking around real properties, railroads, and utilities, spending real money.
[Technology] Wasp Knife injects ball of gas to freeze organs, sounds unpleasant (Coolest Gadgets)

The Wasp Knife might be the least pleasant way to be stabbed to death, not that there is a pleasant method for doing so. Designed for use by hunters and divers as protection against bears and sharks, the specially designed knife has an exploding tip that injects a highly compressed ball of gas which freezes the victims organs in a radius about the size of a basketball. While a knife with such awesome brutality might be great for protecting against the dangers of the wild, British officials are worried that the Wasp Knife might fall into the wrong hands. Result? People dying in pretty unpleasant ways. We can only imagine how bad it would suck to have a frozen bowel. Said to be able to “drop many of the world’s largest land predators”, the Wasp Knife literally snap-freezes any tissue or organ within the gas explosions range. And for a price of £200, it’s not totally unlikely that the knife could fall into the grasp of some non-kosher hands. The Brits will most likely take advantage of people who are caught using a Wasp Knife as weaponry to promote the iron claw of misuse. Any one caught using the blade for something other than protection will likely find themselves in a high-profile position of criminal finger pointing.
[Technology] Heat Me USB Heated Stirrer (Coolest Gadgets)

Here’s one of the many problems about corporate jobs. You work in a small cubicle in the middle of a sardine packed high-rise so the coffee machine is no doubt a few minutes away from your small work space. So by the time you get back to your desk after the long trek from the coffee machine, your caffeinated beverage is left luke warm. That’s just no way to live. The ingenious Heat Me is a great little USB gadget which acts as both a beverage stirrer and a liquid heating device. Just plug the Heat Me into your computers USB port and the metal coil will heat up for optimal coffee heating power. One thing you should watch out for though is we imagine the Heat Me gets pretty toasty. And unless you have the same sort of Milton-mentality then the character from Office Space, you probably don’t think it’s a great career choice to burn down your building. As far as we can tell, the Heat Me is no more than a conceptual pipe dream for the time being. Though we’ve seen in the past that the most ingenious ideas often times get scooped up or copied by gadget stores, so here’s hoping that Heat Me gets the credit it’s due.
The INFINXX AP23 holds the distinction of being the smallest iPhone/iPod Bluetooth A2DP Stereo Audio Transmitter in the world, and until somebody else steps forward to dispute that claim, I’ll take Brando’s word for it. Weighing in at a mere 5 grams, this device allows you to groove to your favorite tunes from the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod without being bogged down by wires thanks to Bluetooth technology. Of course, that would mean investing in a quality pair of Bluetooth headphones, but that’s not what we’re focusing on today. Freedom from wires for $62 sounds just about right to me.
