[Other] Independent audit finds that Boris 'misspent' taxes (Tory Troll)

An independent audit conducted by a panel of anti-Boris bloggers has concluded that Patience Wheatcroft and her team 'misspent' £50,000 of taxpayers money. After months of briefings and hype, the team of Tory councillors and a Tory supporting journalist found absolutely no evidence of corruption or breached rules by Ken Livingstone, Lee Jasper or the LDA. We can therefore only conclude that our money was misspent on a simply staggering scale, by a new Mayor who considers our taxes his personal political cheque book. Former mayor Ken Livingstone said last night: “What a damp squib - Boris Johnson appointed his political henchmen to dig up dirt and this is all they could come up with. Patience Wheatcroft misunderstands the nature of the mayoral system in London. The electorate select a mayor whose values they share and judgement they trust, and then it is up to that person to get on and take decisions for London. If you don't like those decisions you can be pejorative and call them 'whims,' or you can say that the mayor is setting our strategic priorities.” The independent audit of anti-Boris bloggers does not believe that a formal investigation should be undertaken into the appointment of Patience Wheatcroft and her team. Nor do we consider any separate investigation should be undertaken into the millions of pounds 'misspent' on the new Routemaster, the transition team or on paying off Porsche. However, after careful and costly consideration, we do conclude that Boris should kindly get on with running the capital in the ways that voters elected him to do.
Filed under: High-end threads , Celebrity Style The Dark Knight is receiving a huge amount of buzz, largely due to the astounding performance of the late Heath Ledger as The Joker. Apparently he is riveting, and this "sequel" maintains the high standards of excitement and action set by director Chris Nolan's 2005 Batman Begins . We love us some Christian Bale around here, especially when he's dressed up, like at the film's New York premiere on July 14th. Naturally he looked devastating, and even better, everyone at the screening looked goth . They were all dressed in black, as if for a funeral, or a wake. Which in a way, they sort of were.
[Other] Meryl Streep once slept on the streets of London (Cele|bitchy)

According to the new Madonna biography, the legend that she turned up in New York with $35 and worked her way to pop heaven is not true, but it seems that Meryl Streep actually did live the tough life on the streets of London. Just think Oliver Twist with fabulous bone structure. The Hollywood star came to the U.K. when she was a struggling actress in her twenties and earned her keep by busking for loose change. Streep admits that some days she would not earn enough to pay for a hotel - and once had to spend the night in London’s Green Park. She tells British magazine Closer, “On my very, very first trip to London, when I was 20, I went around busking to afford food and overnight accommodation. One night when I hadn’t earned enough, I actually slept in the open in Green Park, under a tree. “The view was of the Ritz hotel and I vowed to myself that night that I was going to stay there one day - and I have!” Contact Music I spent far too many years working for a fast food chain across the street from a magnificent hotel. As I emptied the outdoor garbage cans I could hear the noises of parties from the rooftop swimming pool and when the balls were over, people would come to get burgers in their gowns. I always wanted to go to one of the balls, and the best part of eventually going was when I dropped into my place of work for post-party munchies, I got my meal for free. Which I then proceeded to spill down my dress. I think Meryl Streep has managed to transition from street kid to red carpet with a little bit more class. I tried to find out what she did to busk, unless she did monologues from theatre she learnt at drama school or sang (she’s a professionally trained opera singer) she probably didn’t play an instrument. She didn’t learn to play the violin until 1999. Meryl is promoting her new film Mamma Mia , a film version of the musical about the Swedish supergroup Abba also starring Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. Meryl Streep is shown at the NY premiere of Mama Mia

Contactmusic Ltd : Meryl Streep - Streeps Homeless Experience In London ...
In Case You Didn't Know : Meryl Streep was homeless in London once ...

blogs : Cele|bitchy,In Case You Didn't Know,ExpoSay,PR-Inside.com Entertainment News,Contactmusic Ltd...
(7 posts, last update: 17/07/2008 11:16)

Oh dear. Kerthump! Sorry, that was me falling off the chair because I've been laughing so hard. The Fabian Society has decreed that the word "chav" must be banned . I'd like to know how they propose to do this. Quite apart from the fact that chavs themselves use the term, the case for banning it is pretty thin. Even very offensive words, such as nigger, are not banned - they just don't get voiced in polite society. It doesn't stop some people using it, though. How would a word be banned, anyway? Would parliament have to pass a law? Would the police then be obliged to arrest anyone heard using "chav", take them down the station and charge them? Would the courts become clogged with non-chavs and chavs alike being found guilty and told to pay fines? The hackneyed phrase " PC gone mad " springs to mind here, in terms of what the Fabian Society proposes. You cannot legislate against thoughts or words - that way lies the Unspeak of 1984 . Here in the UK, we have no overall body to determine the acceptability or otherwise of the words we speak and write, unlike in France, for example, where the Academie Francaise decrees what homegrown neologisms must be used in place of imported English words and even how words must be spelled. Thank goodness - I lived in France for a while and never quite got the point of the Academie and its rule of law. Controlling language ultimately attempts to control people's thoughts and is a form of censorship. Chav is as much a part of the English language in this country as the words tea and cricket. And until the government does actually pass a law against its use, the Fabian Society would be better off picking a battle it can win...

BBC News : Ban word 'chav', says think-tank ...
De-tec-tive : Wot no chav? ...

blogs : BBC News,Diary of a wordsmith,De-tec-tive,Manchester Online...
(4 posts, last update: 16/07/2008 21:58)
