Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza, a former kidnapping victim, triumphed over 79 of the world's most beautiful women to be crowned Miss Universe 2008. Dayana Mendoza was nothing less than stunning throughout the pageant! Once again, the U.S. contestant was second-rate. Carrying on new tradition, Crystle Stewart, from Texas, tripped and fell on stage [video] at the global beauty contest, just as Miss USA did last year. Some suggest Stewart's "look" was transformed for the pageant so that she would look more "universal." If you google her pictures you'll find a smashing Beyoncish African-American beauty. Her pageant make-up and hair made her appear slightly "oily" (is that what she slipped on') and seemed to direct her ethnicity toward a Spanish or Mixed-race individual. She shoulda stayed with her "regular" beauty pageant contestant look - she would've won! Dayana Mendoza, 22, was once kidnapped in her homeland and she told reporters that experience taught her to keep cool under pressure, news agency Associated Press reported. She told the Miss Universe website: "I was once kidnapped in what in my country is known as an express kidnapping. It was a very hard experience. "I learned to remain calm in a very stressful situation and to try to reach to the human part of our abductors." Though the mystery has never been solved, many have attached Sean "Diddy" Combs and Christopher Wallace (Biggie Smalls/The Notorious B.I.G.) to the 1994 attack and 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur -- sparking an East Coast/West Coast rap war, leading to Biggie's 1997 murder and escalating the "no snitching" policy into law. The accusation even came from Tupac himself after the attack in 1994. Enter LA Times writer Chuck Phillips, who has been on the beat for quite some time , and continues to be a thorn in the sides of Combs & Co. His latest look at the now 14 year old attack (and 12 year old unsolved murder) contains new information which, in part, backs up "Shakur's insistence that associates of rap impresario Sean 'Diddy' Combs were behind the [1994] assault. Their alleged motives: to punish Shakur for disrespecting them and rejecting their business overtures and, not incidentally, to curry favor with Combs." The associates are two New York hip-hop figures: James "Jimmy Henchman" Rosemond and James Sabatino. The latter is in jail for an unrelated crime, and the former is the CEO of Czar Entertainment; he has never been questioned in the murder case even though an FBI informant pegged him as being involved. Rosemond says he'll be talking to his lawyer about the libelous LA Times article. As for Diddy, he's speaking out against the allegations as well, saying that neither he nor Biggie "had any knowledge of any attack before, during or after it happened," and is "shocked the story was published." He alleges the story, which is based off of FBI records and informant statements, "is a lie. It is beyond ridiculous and completely false. It is beyond ridiculous and completely false." The movie currently titled Notorious (due out in January 2009) will likely have a slant favoring Combs and Biggie. Casting has just been completed and Brooklyn rapper Gravy will play B.I.G. Surprisingly Combs will not play himself -- Derek Luke will take on that role, while Anthony Mackie will play Tupac Shakur. Filming has already begun in New York.

If you thought that the paparazzi and the media that employs/supports them reached their collective nadir on the 31st of August 1997, then the latest obsession with and stalking of Britney Spears must be reaching or even surpassing that level of fixation and disgrace. According to one of the pack that has changed sides in disgust at the current situation , there have been up to 20 or 30 cars with photographers chasing her at times across Los Angeles, with the result that when she was the equivalent of sectioned on Thursday the scrum trailing the police escort stretched longer than a football field. This was despite the police trying every tactic to throw the paparazzi off the scent, setting up roadblocks, guarding the house where she was staying from a possible invasion, and blacking out the windows of the ambulance, all at a staggering cost of an estimated £12,000. It's impossible not to be reminded of the echoes of the incident alluded to above, especially given some of the evidence given at the inquest still on-going. The debate about celebrity, and how much those who become famous are both selling themselves and also putting the media up to some of what they do can be as complicated as the most in-depth philosophical discussion. You only have to walk into any newsagent, look at the increasingly packed shelf of magazines dedicated to the generally talentless and worthless clique to know that most of the guff included in them is with the implicit consent of the person being talked about or interviewed. It's also true that they often make chilling demands to the interviewer about what can and cannot be discussed, some even only giving their OK for the article to be run once its been given the once over by their PR consultant or themselves. Even the likes of Richard and Judy have been accused of this in the past. When Jordan's disabled son was recently mocked by Heat magazine in a sticker give-away , it was hard to feel too much sympathy when she has so assiduously
