Bikes, bikes , bikes and er bikes - Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands()

Jump to the full entry & travel map Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands From hamburg we got a fairly early train into Holland. After a slight complication with connecting trains we arrived in Utrecht. We had decided to base ourselves here for the next 4 nights as it was much cheaper hostel wise than Amsterdam but still only half an hour from Rotterdam and Amsterdam, two cities we wanted to visit, with trains running all night. This decision proved to be a masterstroke. A big university town, although small in physical size, it was freshers week when we arrived, and in a city were girls out number boys three to one, it was needless to say we wern't going to left unentertained. Freshers week for the dutch is the time were there student pick a society to belong to each with their own bar and strange rules and rituals, the older students would try to sell their society by having the best party in the city. At this point and throughout our stay here you can literally count the number of people over 30 on two hands, which made for a very vibrant carnival atmosphere. Everybody has a bike. Every possible thing you could chain a bike to had a bike attached to it. The cyclists ruled the road too, with cycle lanes on every street, something we could learn from back home, although it helps when you are in a country with absolutely no hills. We didn't arrive on the first night till about 19:30 so we checked in to the hostel (in a bizarre twist the exact same one Gary stayed in 6 years ago while on a uni trip, by total coincidence) and headed out. We found ourselves in one the society bars and got talking to some locals who told us all about the society system. In Utrecht the rule is bars don't shut until there are less than 7 people left in them, so it was a good night. Thursday 14/08/08 We woke up, had our excellent free breakfast, then headed out to explore the city. We went out to the university area, which has a lot of nice buildings to see, and explored the narrow str

Jordy Brouwer on his way to Utrecht?(Broomy)

. After recent speculation linking Jordy Brouwer with a move to Utrecht, it has been reported today Utrecht have have now struck a deal with Liverpool to take our Reserve striker Jordy Brouwer on a season-long loan. “I've spoken to him in England," Utrecht technical director Piet Buter told De Telegraaf. "We said that on 16th August we will see him. If he is good, we want to sign him for perhaps a season." The young Dutchman moved to Liverpool last summer from Ajax and Utrecht have expressed interest about taking him on a season-long loan. Jordy Brouwer has been a regular starter for the reserves all season and found his goals-scoring form at the end of the season where he netted 4 goals in the last 5 games in the league!! Brouwer played 17 games for the reserves in the league scoring 7 goals along the way. Ablett commented last season “He takes a lot of the physical burden of Krisztian. He's more of the target man and Krisztian tries to get beyond him.”

Oudaen in Utrecht(Dutched Pinay on Expatriation)

In the Centrum of Utrecht lies this small city castle along the Oudegracht veiled from the hustle and bustle of everyday little city life – shoppers going about on their daily and weekly rounds, street vendors displaying their wares, musicians on the prowl for a few euros for a serenade, food carts selling ijs, shaorma, and pizza. I like to sit late afternoon in the outside terrace of this little city castle and listen to the flower sellers scream on top of their voices their last call for the flowers. Having witbier in Stadskasteel Oudaen in Utrecht. I quite like the striking imperial doorway of this café restaurant which was once a castle and still is a brewery. Stadskasteel Oudaen brews its own beer. They also have brewery tours. I had witbier (wheat beer – they have a significant high proportion of malted barley) which I think is their Ouwe Daen beer. It tasted really good. Witbiers are said to be descendants from medieval beers. It has this thick hazy color and white lather top when served cold. I think I just recently realized that this café restaurant by the Oudegracht is actually a castle and a brewery.

So today we went to Utrecht and looked around. I tried straightening my hair this morning and burned a chunk off right in the front. I don't think my voltage converter is working. Also bought a card reader in Utrecht but of course it does not work. Argh Anywho Urtrecht was cool. It was semireminiscent of Amsterdam...lot of canals and cafes and little shops. Very busy. I'm not seeing any clear

Jump to the full entry & travel map Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands Today we spent the afternoon in Utrecht. I really wish we were there on a day (not a Sunday) when the stores were open! There looks like there is some great stores! We went to Museum van Speelklok tot Pierement, a museum with musical organs and clocks. I really love Utrecht; it was one of my favorite cities so far - probably because of the wonderful shopping, cool canals, and beautiful churches, too!

Zoekt u een huis?(Dutched Pinay on Expatriation)

It’s been quite some time now searching high and low for houses in Utrecht and North Holland area without any upshot whatsoever. I’m basically looking in and around Amsterdam and Utrecht, although I prefer Utrecht because it’s the wooded part of the country and I just love the character of Utrecht’s suburbs compared to the windy and barren feel of the North Holland swamps. But, helaas, I’m finding it very hard to find something that I like along my earmarked budget. For example, this 142-square meter house (considered to be already big in Dutch standards, houses and apartments here are small) in Utrecht below is priced at a €785K. A quick translation in US$ would be a whopping $1.155M! In other parts of the world, for this price you will already get a huge mansion with an entertainment park. If I were to buy this house in neighboring Germany and Belgium, I would get this 20%-40% cheaper, even in prime location. For starters in the middle age bracket group looking for a free-standing house with a minimum 150-square meter space in nearby Utrecht and Amsterdam would cost a minimum €450K ($662K) investment. Plus VAT would make it jump just over half a million Euros. The downside with this price range is the market itself. The demand is higher than the supply as there are a good number of buyers out there (2-incomers have recently been popular in this country) who can easily afford a mortgage in this price bracket. So, let’s say, I go check outside the Ranstad border – Ranstad is the urban civilization ring of the Netherlands that compose of the 4 big cities: Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague, then my choices get better. Moreover, I get more value for my money. But, work with better pay is in Amsterdam and commuting to and fro these places would be at most 2 hours during peak hours and 1 hour during off peak hours, both one way. I can however get a similar type and quality house like the above foto in Almere for under or just over the half million mark but then as many locals would say --- maar ja, je woont in Almere... een hele saai stadje. SIGH... to a certain extent I am really waiting for the credit and housing crisis to hit the Netherlands... but... it looks like, amidst all these muddled speculations, it is never going to happen. The Dutch financial epidermis layer seems to be quite strongly sealed at the moment.
