Meet a delegate: Attorney General Martha Coakley(David)

Attorney General Martha Coakley was kind enough to sit down with me for a few minutes after this morning's MA delegation breakfast (which was quite a show -- more on that later). AG Coakley spoke about what an Obama presidency will mean for her efforts as the chief law enforcement officer of Massachusetts; about transitioning from a strong backer of Hillary Clinton to a committed supporter of Barack Obama; and about the priorities of her office for the next two years. She's a committed and eloquent advocate. Give her a listen. (NB: I apologize for the poor video quality -- I will try later to replace this with a better version.)

This One's For Martha Coakley(Bruce)

Another video from this weekend's Northeast Blogger Self-Help Seminar. The force Hopenchange is strong with this one. There's nothing on Earth more cockle-warming than bringing a new female shooter into the fold at Bloggershoot and watching her rapidly progress from .22 rifles up to .38 wheelguns, AR-15's, Enfields, 12-ga shotguns, and finally trying her hand at a little full-auto goodness with a Madsen submachine gun . Sorry, Martha, but Lissa doesn't look all that "discouraged". I realize the thought of women empowering themselves scares you senseless. And, I do feel your pain. What kind of precedent are we setting for our children? Who wants to live in a world where women are seen as independent and free citizens? I mean, if women can't be forced to live their lives cowering in fear in the face of evil and groveling on their knees in the face of an authoritarian government, begging for your benevolence and care, then what's the point?

Tuesday MA Delegation Wrap-up(Bob)

Obama delegate Sean Riley , co-chair of Boston's Generation Obama, chairman of the Board of the Directors of MassVOTE. Spinach quiche, bacon, coffee cake, fresh fruit, coffee. Solid. Martha Coakley: focused, sharp, totally on point. The most impressive Massachusetts politician I have seen here so far. On Clinton: "It is possible to be disappointed and think that it was time for a woman to be President and still work hard for Obama." So much for the idiotic "traditional media" theme of the moment about angry Clinton supporters unwilling to back Obama and a potentially devastating rift in the party. I have seen no evidence at all of such a phenomenon in the Massachusetts delegation, where one might expect it to be strong given Clinton's overwhelming primary victory. Disappointed, yes; but ready to work hard for Obama and victory in November. Frankly, I think this is a bullshit controversy created by the media encouraged by the GOP. Joe Kennedy. Standing ovation from the delegation. Rambling, vaguely incoherent speech. "There's more torture in Guantanamo than there ever was in Casto's Cuba." WTF? And JFK's Bay of Pigs anti-Castro fiasco? Hello? Al Franken. Wandering and a bit dull, surprisingly. Maybe someone told him he has to be dull because Minnesota voters will never vote for a comedian as a Senator. But he is a comedian. Best line, in response to a cell phone interruption: "I hope you are waiting for a kidney." Tough race against Norm Coleman, but important if we're going to get a solid Senate majority. Fundraiser coming up in Cambridge Tuesday 18 September at the Charles Hotel: $125 "Democratic Party activist" rate. Mike Dukakis. Says ground game is critical for 2008 victory (apparently, the key to winning an election is getting more voters than one's opponent: who knew). Massachusetts volunteers campaigning in NH are a waste of time: wrong accent, wrong culture. (Stay at home and read BMG, I guess). Whatever. His record on winning elections isn't so great as I recall. We made a little pitch for the blogosphere, thanked everyone for inviting us and including us in their delegation, urged them all to contribute to the site, and pimped the 9-12 fundraiser. I hope we didn't disgrace you all, esteemed and most excellent readers.

Attorney General Martha Coakley today authorized a ballot question proposing to reinstate a nearly century old law barring out-of-state gay couples from marrying… In her ruling, AG Coakley said the question’s supporters, MassResistance, had met the necessary technical requirement for filing a ballot question.
This Is Unbelievable...Not(Bruce)

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley , talking about criticizing the father who punched out the guy he caught molesting his 4-year-old son in a supermarket men's room (and, who was subsequently arrested for his morally just actions). "All I'm saying is that...we really try and discourage people from self-help." Up yours, you arrogant, condescending, authoritarian bitch! Fuck you and every other fascist scumbag down in Massachusetts, suckling from the taxpayers' teat, masquerading as faithful servants of the public trust, whilst bending over to make life as comfortable as possible for the most reprehensible breed of subhuman filth walking our streets. I pray that some day, should you find yourself in a similar situation, needing to indulge in a little "self-help", you have the wherewithal to step down off your high horse and comply with your own oppressive, authoritarian dogma, and surrender yourself to the next piece of garbage, lowlife predator looking to treat you like a slab of beef. Now, ask me how I really feel. The funniest part (not that any of this can actually be described as "funny") is that these people (not that any of them can actually be described as a subset of "We, the People"), and the idiots who continually put them in office (not that any of them...no, wait, they actually are idiots), are still, to this day, stumped as to what they could possibly do to keep all the productive taxpayers from moving out of the state. Though, I have to admit, when I ask myself why I stayed in Massachusetts for as long as I did, I find myself stumped like you read about.

Dog Racing Ban Can Appear on Ballot(Meg)

Yesterday, in Carney v. Attorney General , the Supreme Judicial Court upheld Attorney General Martha Coakley's decision to certify a ballot question on dog tracks in Massachusetts. The court said that although there are only a few dog tracks in Massachusetts, the question is not barred as a "local" question. "That the present economic realities of the industry might make this prospect [of additional tracks] unlikely to materialize is irrelevant; the proposed law would change the legal status of dog racing Statewide." Further, track owners "have no compensable property interest in their racing licenses." The Boston Herald reports that "if approved, the move would ban dog racing as of Jan. 1, 2010."
