John C. Reilly and Philip Seymour Hoffman: Two Paths Diverged in a Forest()

Photo: Columbia Pictures, WireImage This past weekend saw the $30 million opening of Step Brothers , the latest fart-addled film product from Judd Apatow's ceaselessly productive, money-printing comedy factory. In it, formerly serious thespian John C. Reilly plays a 40-year-old man-child who meets his idiot match when he becomes accidentally related to Will Ferrell (all customary physical humor, name-calling, and testicle-showing ensue, naturally). While we watched, it occurred to us that John C. Reilly is getting so good at being Will Ferrell, it's easy to forget he was once almost Philip Seymour Hoffman. Remember Magnolia , Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling, Altman-y 1999 film, with the Aimee Mann songs and the frogs? Amid a large ensemble cast were two rising actors on the verge of breakout: Reilly and Hoffman. The pair played the movie's working-class heart and soul — Reilly as a lonely cop, Hoffman as a lonely nurse — quiet sounding boards for other characters broken by lives of privilege and decadence. Anderson, who'd cast them before in Hard Eight and Boogie Nights seemed to recognize they were cut from the same cloth — actors of considerable talent, depth, and pants size, both with invisible technique and an impressive knack for disappearing in a role. Their performances in Magnolia , the movie's two most memorable, made clear they were headed for bigger things. And, for a while at least, it seemed like they were headed for the same thing. In a 2000 Broadway revival of Sam Shepard's True West , Hoffman and Reilly earned Tony nominations by alternating roles nightly as brothers, a straight-laced, college-educated screenwriter and a transient white-trash burglar, who gradually morph into the same person. From there, Hoffman won critical and commercial notice with supporting parts in acclaimed hits like The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain ; Reilly did too, in The Hours and Chicago , for which he scored an Oscar nod. Reviews for Hoffman's performance in 2003's Owning Mahowny tipped him as one of the leading actors of his generation; that same year, Daniel Day-Lewis, Reilly's co-star in Gangs of New York , called him a "terrible man" for "making all the actors around him look like they're acting." These days, though, their work couldn't possibly seem more different. In 2006, Hoffman won an Oscar for his portrayal of Truman Capote and, for reasons still unclear, Reilly fell in with the Apatow fraternity, playing Will Ferrell's NASCAR sidekick in Talladega Nights . Hoffman followed Capote with serious roles in The Savages , Before the Devil Knows You're Dead , and Charlie Wilson's War , which got him another Academy Award nomination. Last year, Reilly countered with a biopic of his own: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story . And while Hoffman's never been a drama snob, exactly (as you may recall, he once pooped his pants in a Ben Stiller movie), at this point in his career, the chances of him making a movie with McLovin seem as unlikely as Reilly's of winning an Oscar. In Step Brothers , it's actually Reilly responsible for most of the Ferrell-esque humor; the best (and dumbest) lines ("Your voice — it's like a combination of Fergie and Jesus!") are his, plus, of the two main stars, he spends the most onscreen time in his underpants, astonishing considering who he's up against. Even more amazing, though, is how quickly and capably he's been able to fill the role of the classic Apatovian lead, a job for which, on paper at least, he seems to have none of the requisite credentials (he was never on Saturday Night Live OR Freaks and Geeks ). So why, then, did he change directions? He turned down Anchorman in 2004 to make The Aviator — did he regret it? Was he sick of earning a character actor's salary? Maybe he just felt like having more fun. Heck, any of these reasons probably would've done it for us . But who's really better off now? Hoffman can take his pick of challenging dramatic roles; Reilly gets to party with Seth Rogen and Sacha Baron Cohen on weekends. Hoffman shoots depressing sex scenes with Marisa Tomei; Reilly does hilarious ones with Jenna Fischer. Hoffman has the respect and adoration of critics and peers; Reilly is almost certainly making more money. Hoffman … actually, he may want to see if McLovin's free after all.

Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim on Ball Jokes, John C. Reilly, and their Awesome Show()

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! runs every Sunday night in 11-minute episodes on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim at 12:30 am. "We have dick jokes and ball jokes and fart jokes and dry comedy and sort of intellectual comedy and 'ooh-ma-ma.' We try to keep things balanced." Tim and Eric, respectively If you're not into fake vomit and mock turtlenecks, here's some good news: There are plenty of comedians for you to like besides Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. The bad news, of course, is that you'll miss out on some of the most absurdly inventive humor to feature on your TV/PC/iPhone lately. The creators of The Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! are not yet household names, but given their growing number of die-hard fans, may soon achieve that status – almost certainly if said household is under the age of 40 and favors ball jokes. Heidecker and Wareheim have been busy taping The Awesome Show's 20-episode third season on Adult Swim (which premiered this past Sunday, July 27), releasing a DVD of seasons one and two, producing a weekly real-time Internet talk show for the (now-defunct) online channel Superdeluxe.com, and most recently, staging their live tour, the aptly-named Tim and Eric Awesome Tour, which passed through the Highline Ballroom in late April. I sat down with them to learn their thoughts on random humor, what happens when you search for "Doors horny" on YouTube, and about upcoming projects that may or may not involve Dr. Steve Brule.

Filed under: Fandom , Movie Marketing , Unscripted , Trailers and Clips It's finally time for Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly to bunk together in Step Brothers , which means it is time for another edition of Moviefone's Unscripted -- questions from the readers and questions off the top of their heads all mixed into one! Above you can check out an exclusive clip, which you won't see in the Moviefone segment, where Ferrell discusses Anchorman 2 . After that, head over to Moviefone and spend a few minutes with the funny men. They chide Moviefone for the title of this series, and then they discuss focusing the hate, little baby ham hands, and one heck of an awesome shot-by-shot remake idea they had. When you hear what it is, remember the movie's shower scene and imagine the possible sexiness. Step Brothers opens this Friday. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Reilly answer the tough and sometimes "animosity"-inducing questions in a speed round we'd all like to hear! "Will's obviously funnier," says John, before doing a rock-paper-scissors match with Will to determine the outcome. Who forgets their lines more?
Step Brothers(K. Silem Mohammad)

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in Step Brothers (dir. Adam McKay, 2008). The greatest American film of the twenty-first century so far? No. Or is it? No, that would be Anchorman , or maybe Talladega Nights . Scoff if you want, but how many directors have three first films (or any films in a row) as intensely, fully realized as Adam McKay's trilogy of the "stuplime," to borrow a term from Sianne Ngai ? (Will Ferrell must receive a lot of the credit, of course, as his ad-libbing is so pervasively constitutive of the flavor of these movies.) There's only one moment in Step Brothers that feels like a misstep (pun noticed at the moment of commission). That's when the writers inexplicably feel it necessary to have Richard Jenkins spell out to us that the two nitwits played by Ferrell and O'Reilly are more interesting and endearing in their state of stunted maturity than when they get their socialized act together and learn how to fill out tax forms. It's not just that it's obvious; it's that it attempts somehow to justify what is appealing precisely because it resists assimilation into justificatory structures. Brendan and Dale are unacceptable . They're complete idiots, noxious to others and hazards to their own well-being. When they manage to pull off "normal" long enough to point the movie towards its inevitable resolution, it's funny because their version of normal is just as stupid as their version of stupid. To have them realize that the squares they become are boring squares is too easy, and reflective, cathartic acceptance on the part of those around them muddies the humor. But this is one imperfection in the midst of a veritable grand ballet of unapologetically farcical comic debasement. Some of the funniest moments belong to Kathryn Hahn, as the frustrated wife of Will Ferrell's brother Derek. Some viewers might object to the way in which her desire is presented a manifestation of the feminine grotesque, but within the overall anthropological erotics of the film's universe, she's just another brave pioneer at the outer boundaries of self-respect and imaginable subjecthood. When she takes charge of a urinal in a restaurant men's room, it's a bracing moment of political idiosyncrasy. Her confidence exceeds practicality, but as we cut to the next scene, we're spared the complications; we're left with merely the optimism of her bravado.
