VINTAGE: David Strachan to run Darlington in his 1962 Nascar Ford Galaxie(noreply@blogger.com (GREGM))

Now in his 44th year of motorsport, David Strachan is once again behind the wheel. After campaigning with his son, Malcolm, in Karting and GT sports cars for many years, seeing Malcolm secure many wins and four series championships titles, David has entered into vintage auto racing. Having built a 1962 Ford Galaxie Stock Car, a replica of the famed Holman-Moody cars of the 60's to race primarily at Mosport, Strachan is venturing south for some super-speedway competition. David Strachan's Galaxie is built to stringent NASCAR specifications and will compete this Labour Day weekend at Darlington Raceway, in Darlington, South Carolina. This historic track hosted the Southern 500 for decades and is one of the most famous, or infamous of all the superspeedways. Strachan expects speeds upwards of 150 mph (245 km/h) on the banked 1-3/8 mile raceway.
Five thunks from the very long evening with Darlo. 1- Fourth division side at home, should be straightforward, yadda yadda whatever. But a fourth division side dropping deep and attacking neatly is still an awkward opponent…. 2- …particularly if you’re fielding what might have been the lightest Watford line-up in history.
Stadium ban prompts comic strip(arbroath)

A newspaper has printed a Roy Of The Rovers-style comic strip instead of live action photographs after being banned from a football stadium. The Northern Echo's pages feature the illustrated version of Hartlepool United's giant-killing Carling Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion. The Darlington-based paper, together with the Hartlepool Mail, has been banned from Victoria Park. The club is in dispute with the newspapers over commercial rights. The Mail's photographers are not allowed into the stadium, and reporters, who are denied press access, have been buying tickets and reporting from the terraces. The Northern Echo was banned for supplying the Mail with pictures of recent matches and refusing to give a commitment not to do so in the future. You can see the full comic strip here.

The photo up there was taken just before the gig started by Ian Wright and is available as a signed print here. Apparently the gig came to a standstill after 3 minutes when the fuses blew!
Violetta the Volksbus is heading for Connect!(noreply@blogger.com (Tom Morton))

So...here she is! A PROPER camper! Last night, under conditions of great secrecy, I took a train from Glasgow to Edinburgh, another from Edinburgh to Newcastle, and then finally one from Newcastle to Darlington, there to meet a man called Don, custodian of Violetta the VW camper (technically, a Caravelle minibus converted to camper status). It was an eBay adventure! Would Don be there? Would the 1985 bus now known as Violetta (a mere 270,000 miles vintage) make it back up the road to Glasgow? Through the night? A friend has described the A1 in its Northumberland stretch as 'a third world road' but that's pushing it. It is, however, pretty intimidating in the wee sma' hours when the petrol gauge (typical VW) merely wavers slightly no matter how much very expensive fuel is in the tank. Never has the petrol station at the Redford Barracks exit on the Edinburgh City Bypass loomed so reassuringly. There is, as Dave, a fellow VW fan, says, something oddly addictive about these old rear-engined buses. That strange chirruping exhaust note, the way they weave about in the wind...anyway, Violetta made the 222 miles to Glasgow safely (the indicators gave up around Durham, but Don says 'the relay just needs a wee wiggle') and the great news is that Susan is (a) not too upset and (b) has found the missing camper van ticket for the Connect festival! So, a fine feast at the Mussel Inn (salmon and prawns) a pint or two at the Horseshoe Bar (good to meet Frank, who not only likes the show but whose 21-year-old son likes the show) and then back to the west end...now... ...will Violetta start tomorrow?

The House Bunny - 8/24/2008()

In The House Bunny, Anna Faris looks significantly more glammed up than when she came into movies as the star of . In that film, she was stuck in a poor man's Neve Campbell role by design -- a spoof of a minor star, a winking knockoff. Faris stayed through the franchise , and coming out the other side, she still plays bimbos and cast-offs like Shelley Darlington, a second-string Playboy bunny who has turned 27 without hitting centerfold, and is summarily ejected from the Playboy mansion.But years of scene-stealing in both indie movies and lowbrow comedies have refined Faris's approachable goofiness, and she finds an original, star-quality approach to playing a cheesy sex bomb. As Shelley, Faris widens her eyes (or as Shelley refers to them, "the nipples of the face") as if she's struggling to see through her own blissful daze, and speaks with a breathy, earnest tone. She's superficial and bubbleheaded, but doesn't have a malicious bone in her toned body; Faris finds comedy in her innocent belief in the healing togetherness of the Playboy fantasy. Shelley's attempts at sexiness are so goofy that they go back around and become sexy again.The best you can say about The House Bunny is it gives Faris a character and a framework and gets out of her way. In this case, that nearly qualifies as high praise. The bare-bones story: Shelley wanders into a run-down sorority house and offers her services as "house mother" to the misfit Zeta girls, whose lack of pledges threatens their chapter's survival. Makeovers, house parties, revenges of nerds, and lessons follow.Emma Stone plays Natalie, the girls' ringleader, and finds the right note of believable nerdy awkwardness; as in , you can almost believe she's geeky and down-to-earth despite being, you know, kind of a stone cold fox already. She and Faris make a good team, but the rest of the sorority keeps crowding the focus. Rather than find five or six personalities, most of the supporting girls are given the one-joke treatment c
